How Does My Occupation Affect My Application?

Social security disability benefits help thousands of Americans live more stable and healthy lives every year. If you are experiencing difficultly gaining a steady income due to a physical, emotional, or psychological disability, you need to consider the advantages of gaining these valuable benefits. Depending on your occupation and work history, however, the type of experience you have attempting to gain benefits may differ.

For those working jobs that require long amounts of exhaustive work with few break periods, a disability can become particularly problematic. For this reason, the SSA is more likely to approve a benefits application on the first go if a person has little to no requirements to work a less physically demanding job. By assessing your current residual functional capacity, you will have a better idea of whether or not you will be successful in your particular application. Asking your attorney about your chances in this scenario is highly recommended.

Those that are currently receiving benefits, but feel they may be able to return to work, can always apply for a trial work period. If approved, you will be able to work for this “trial period” for at least nine months while still receiving the full amount of the SSI or SSDI benefits you have been awarded. However, you must report all of your work activity and to the SSA during this time, and prove that your disability is continuing to affect your body/mind. When approved for a trial work period, you will be given a full 60-month period to work the required nine months.

Depending on the amount of work you have performed, the program you should apply to can differ. For those that have worked and earned work credits, Social Security Disability Income (SSDI) is appropriate. Those who are looking to receive benefits based on income and resource criteria, however, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is more appropriate.
