Once your military service is complete, you will want to collect the benefits that were promised before you signed up for the service. If you are unsure whether you are receiving what you are entitled to or don’t know how and where to start to begin receiving benefits, veterans’ benefits lawyers in New York can answer your questions.

Types of Benefit Programs

The military offers four different types of benefit programs. Depending on your circumstances, you may qualify for some or all of these programs. If you developed a disability while in the military, you may be eligible for veterans’ compensation benefits, to qualify for veterans’ compensation benefits, you must have received the injury or developed the condition while in the service, be experiencing a current disability, and have medical evidence to support not only the diagnosis but also the fact that the condition developed due to your military service.

Total disability based on individual unemployability, or TDIU, is compensation you may receive if your condition prevents you from working. You qualify for this benefit if your impairment is severe enough that it will stop you from continuing to be gainfully employed. If you don’t qualify for TDIU, you may still be eligible for some monthly compensation. Disability is rated in 10% increments from zero to 100%. Some degree of disability, even if it is not enough to prevent you from working, may still qualify you for a monthly benefit.

Veterans’ Pensions

If you have no current income, you may qualify for Veterans Administration pension benefits. You cannot receive other compensation and pension benefits as well. If you are eligible under more than one program, the VA will provide the interest that is higher.
